Fraser’s Point of View
“Fraser can we please leave now? It’s really spooky out here in the middle of the night.” Kyle complained, as his head kept peaking over his shoulder.
“Kyle calm down, I’m trying to make sure we have everything.” I whispered, fumbling with our bags.
Everything was finally ready to go. We were going to run away together so that Kyle’s dad couldn’t take him half way around the world! That man was a traveler. Him and his band were always on tour. The reason Kyle had to live with him was because his mother was a terrible drunk. So of course he won the fight. If Kyle went with him, we would never see each other again. That’s why we needed to do this. It was the only way out.
“Alright… but please hurry! I think someone might be coming!”
I grabbed hold of him, and held him tight. “Your father isn’t going to get you Kyle. You have to remember to trust in me, alright?” I sighed into his ear “We are going to get out of here, and when your dad comes tomorrow… we’ll be long gone.”
He kissed the side of my cheek, and nodded his head in agreement. I just knew that was, what was really bothering him.
As we were standing there, the yellow glare of the taxi approached us. On the phone I told him no honking, because I seriously couldn’t afford to have our cover blown. Besides, what moron would honk at 3:30 am?
“It’s here.” I breathed, reaching down and picking up the bags.
“How are you gonna pay for it? I’ve only got about 50 bucks…” he sighed, staring into my eyes.
“I have a few hundred… give or take a thousand.” I smiled, gently closing the taxi’s trunk. He stared at me with a hint of confusion.
“I told you I would take care of it. I’ve been saving this money for a rainy day. Whelp, it sure is pouring.”
We both laughed slightly, and hopped into the car.
“Twinbrook Airport, and step on it.”
We traveled further and further into the night. A couple of times I caught myself looking back and that hint of doubt creeping in. I tried to stay brave for my Kyle, but inside I was screaming terror. Here we were only 17 years old. No food, barely any money and we were traveling to god knows where.
I took Kyle by the hand, and squeezed it in mine. He turned his head towards me, and smiled.
“Everything is going to be okay.” I whispered over to him.
“As long as I’m with you.” he whispered back, before staring out the window once more.
Once at the airport, we paid off the taxi driver and headed inside. We read the list of places that were taking off in the next hour and we both picked a place called “Ocean Breeze Valley.” It was a bit pricey, but it was either that or someplace that sounded like it wanted to eat us.
Ocean Breeze it is. Now, I know we are only 17 and you need an ID to get tickets… so we paid some guy off. We told him it was life or death situation and that we needed them now. He fell for it hard, and we boarded the plane.
“Kyle… if that baby doesn’t stop crying, I am seriously going to jump out the window.” I said through gritted teeth. I just got away from this, I don’t need more!
“Would you stop?” he snapped at me “You’ve been complaining about everything! Your soda wasn’t cold, a kid was kicking your seat, and now the baby is crying!”
“They were all true! Can’t you hear that little bugger?”I complained once more, shielding my ears with my hands.
“What’s next? You going to complain about being in the back rows? About, the ocean not being blue enough?” he chuckled, and I pushed him.
“Alright. I’ll stop.” I sighed, throwing my head into my hand.
“Just look out the window babe. Get your mind off flying. I can see you hate everything about it.” he laughed once more, and I gave him a dirty look. Okay, he knows I hate it, so he pestered me because he thought it was funny? Cute. Real Cute.
I grumbled a bit more, before glancing out the window. When I saw that we had arrived, my whole attitude reversed. We’re here! We’re finally here!
“Kyle look how beautiful this place is!” I exclaimed, almost jumping up and down in my seat.
After a few moments we landed, and received our bags. We slowly made our way out of the airport, and into the fresh smelling air of Ocean Breeze. It was such a breath taking place, and so quiet. The lady at the front of the airport said it was a number one vacation spot, but… from the looks of it, I didn’t think I would mind living here at all.
“Kyle… before we do anything, there is something we have to take care of.” I sighed, grabbing him by the arm.
“Where are we going?”
We got directions from a local, and took a taxi over to OB High.
“You have GOT to be kidding me!” he groaned “We leave on an epic quest, and the first place you take me… is school? Sweetie, I love you… but this is kinda killing the mood.”
“We have no choice, babe! We have to finish our senior year. I do NOT want to be working at some fast food place my entire life. We have to graduate.” I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck.
“Fine. But I don’t know how your pulling this off. We obviously need our parents for this.”
“Don’t worry…” I laughed nervously “We’ll think of something.”
We walked through the silent halls of the school building, and made our way to the main office. Kyle and I both took a hard gulp, before pushing open the door. When we walked in, a lady at a desk looked up at us. “Can I help you boys?”
“Uh, yes. We need to see the principle.” I coughed, and my palms grew sweaty.
“Take a seat. He’s with another student right now.” she sighed, before going back to her computer.
We both trailed over to the small chairs, and planted ourselves in them. “Now what?” Kyle sighed, shrugging his shoulders.
“Just… give me a second.” I groaned, running my fingers through my hair
“Alright, so what is it you two need? Did you get in a fight? Miss too many assignments?” she smiled weakly, placing her hands neatly in her lap.
I got up from my seat, and shook my head no. “Not exactly. Technically, were not even students here.” I sighed, walking over towards her.
“Your here to enroll? Alone?” she questioned, lowering her glasses so she could meet my gaze.
I threw my hands up, and smiled “Yup.”
I heard Kyle smack the top of his head, and sigh loudly. Give me a break! I’m trying!
She looked at me sternly “Where are your parents?” CRAP!
“Uh… well.. you see… We just moved here, and- uh, our parents are really busy getting things set up, and there doctors- Uhhh” I stuttered, coming off like a complete idiot.
The teacher gleamed “OH! I get it!” she smiled “Their busy, and want you two get a head start on schooling! Why didn’t you say so?”
Then there was a loud smack of my hand meeting my head. “RIGHT! That’s what I was trying to say. Sorry, I have jet lag and I can’t think straight.”
“You can say that again…” Kyle muttered, and I cast him a glare.
“You two can go in now, if you want!” she smiled even wider, pointing to the door “I just love it when students are eager to learn!”
I guess it was just our luck that we got a teacher who was so bouncy and loved school. Otherwise we would have been done for.
“Uh, thanks Miss-“
“Mark! The principles daughter.” she grinned “Now go in there! Don’t keep him waiting.”
Could this get any better?
We both trailed into his office, and we exchanged glances. “Mr. Mark?” Kyle, coughed to break the silence.
“Alright, what did you two do?” he sighed, taking out a pen and paper.
Why do they keep asking us that? Are kids in this school that bad?
“Wait a minute.” he smiled “I’ve never seen you two before. Are you new to acting out? Or here to register?”
We both took a seat, and Kyle glanced over at me. Why do I have to do all the talking?!
“Uh, yes sir.” I replied, swallowing a lump in my throat “Our parents are really busy, unpacking, and being new doctors at the hospital and all… So we decided to sign ourselves up. This is our last year, and we want to make it a good one.”
He brushed his chin, with his fingers and sighed “No parents with you?… I’ve never done it this way before.”
I felt my stomach turn. Oh please don’t ask for our parents! We’re screwed if he does…
“Please sir.” Kyle chipped in “We want to start schooling ASAP. We will have to wait weeks for our parents to settle down, and get us signed up. If we can just do it, or help out in any way?”
“Alright, I’ll tell you what… You get these forms signed and filled out by Monday, and you’ll start that Tuesday. Understood?” he stated, holding the papers in the air.
We looked at each other, and then nodded our head in agreement.
“Alright good. Now I’m pretty sure you can fill out the basics. DOB, Name, Address-“
“A-address?” I interrupted him, then glanced over at Kyle.
“Yea. You might not know it right now, but you’ll learn kiddo. It takes time to get use to a new place.” he smiled, handing Kyle the forms “Now go on. Get those things filled out!”
Just great…. I forgot about the address part. We don’t live anywhere! How are we gonna fill this thing out?
After leaving from the school building, we just went for a walk. We didn’t know where we were going, or when we should stop. There was a lot of things going on inside our heads, and it just felt good to go.
After about 3 hours of traveling, we came across one of the many beaches that Ocean Breeze had to offer. We climbed the steps to the boardwalk, and walked to the end just holding hands, and letting the crisp ocean mist, hit our face.
“It’s beautiful. Isn’t it?” Kyle smiled, staring out into the water. I shrugged my shoulders “Sure.”
I don’t know what it was… but the entire time we were on the beach I felt as if someone was watching us. It was stupid, I know… but I could just feel it.
Kyle let go of my hand and turned to face me “What’s wrong, Fray?”
“I don’t know…” I sighed “I just don’t. I mean, what are we doing Kyle? We don’t have anywhere to live, we have barely any money, and now I feel as if someone is freaking watching us!”
He grabbed my wrist, and smiled into my eyes. “You have to relax, Fraser. We don’t need to worry about any of that right now. We’ll find somewhere to live, and we’ll find a job. Let us just get through our last year of school, and then things will get easier. I swear.”
“And sweetie?” he laughed, clasping his hands on my face “No one is watching us. No one even knows us!”
“No one.” he laughed once more “Now come on, lets check out the rest of this place. We have to find somewhere to sleep, that’s out of the public eye. We don’t need people wondering why two teens are sleeping on a bench or the beach.”
He might be right about somethings, but I SWEAR someone is watching us. I just KNOW it!
“Come on Fraser. Hurry up before the “stalker” gets us.”
“Ha ha… funny.”
Our traveling continued on, past all of society and behind the mountains. At first glance the city part of this place is amazing, but once you go too far… it starts to get really dirty, and down right creepy.
We arrived at this god forsaken beach which was covered in trash, weeds, and god knows what else!
“KYLE!” I screeched “Don’t touch that! You don’t know what it is or whats in it!”
“Relax, it’s just lighter fluid… I think.” he laughed, picking up the rusted bottle and pouring it on the dried out wood. “Hand me my bag, I’ve got a pack of matches in there.”
I went for his bag, and tossed the matches over. He pulled up two old chairs that were tipped over and set them up around the fire pit. “Come on. Sit down.”
“What do you think our parents are doing right now?” I asked Kyle, who was poking the fire.
“Well, there probably fuming that we took off. I mean, we both left notes… so they know were alive.” he laughed “I can just imagine my father, with his stupid hair cut, and smug face yelling at my mother.”
“I bet mine are mad and scared. Probably wondering where we are, and what we’re doing. How we will survive. You think we should call them? Like on a pay phone?” I sighed, throwing some dried grass into the burning flame.
“We haven’t even been gone for 24 hours, and you already want to call them?” he chuckled, casting me a goofy look “Come on sweetie, they’ll be fine without us. We’ll call them in like 30 years or something.”
“30 YEARS!?” I gasped, nearly falling out of my chair “You can’t be serious?”
“No I’m not serious, you gullible cutie.” he laughed, sticking his tongue out at me “Stop worrying about everything and just… enjoy the camp fire.”
“I got a better idea.”
I got out of my seat, and walked over to his. I held out my hand, and he grabbed it. I brought him over to the side, and we both sat in the sand. “Watch the stars with me.”
He placed his hand over mine, and smiled “I’ve been watching the brightest one all day. He’s been right by my side since the beginning.”
I flushed red, then scooted closer to him. “I love you Kyle.”
“I love you too.” He breathed, placing his arm around me. When his skin touched mine, and the feeling of his warmth crept onto my body, I could feel those electric jolts again. Only this time… it was a slightly “different” feeling.
I scooted even closer this time, and lowered my hand onto his thigh. He smirked at me, then caught my gaze. “Fraser… what are you doing?”
Before I had the chance to say or “do” anything, we both heard these loud screams behind us!
“You kids shouldn’t be on this beach!” the voice roared with anger. Kyle and I shot up off the ground and spun around to face the man.
“I thought this was a public beach?” I questioned the scary looking man.
“This ain’t no public beach!” he laughed insanely “This belongs to the mountain man, and do you know who that is?”
“No you two get on out of here, before I send my pack of wolves after yah!” he shouted, inches away from my face.
“Wolves? There aren’t any!” I snapped back, and Kyle tugged at my shirt.
“Ain’t none? Do yah wanna stick around and find out, boy?! I’m sure there real hungry, right now.”
Okay so after that last part, we sorta took off. I wasn’t about to find out if this man had wolves. Even if he didn’t he was insane and creepy all by himself! I wasn’t sharing this “beach” with him for the night. No way!
“And y’all better not come back!”
Not to worry, were not!
After a bit of running we came across this old abandoned house. The door was missing, the windows were boarded and trash was everywhere. It pretty much looked like the beach, only more… disgusting.
“In here.” I shouted, pointing towards the house. Kyle shot me a look, but continued into it.
“Fraser? What… what is this?!”
Thanks for reading! I hope your enjoying this so far. Even those who didn’t pick Fraser. 😉
